Staying Cool, Lap After Lap - DO88 Cooling for the E92 M3

With the recent upgrades — brakes, suspension and wheels — all aimed at consistent track performance, one area was still falling well short: cooling. The E92 M3 DCT is known for running hot, and running hot fast. Water, engine oil, transmission fluid: on our baseline session at Zandvoort they all climbed quickly, and the car could only manage two hot laps before it needed a cool-down. The brakes can now take repeated hot laps and the suspension can handle the pace, so it was time for the cooling system to keep up.

01 — THE PROBLEMTwo laps, then a cool-down

On the stock car, every system that makes heat relies on its own small OEM cooler, and on track they all get loaded at once. The S65 works hard at high revs, the DCT works hard on every shift and every downshift into a braking zone, and the temperatures stack up quickly. At Zandvoort that meant two proper laps, then backing off to let everything come down again.

That's no use for a car built around consistency. Better brakes and suspension only pay off if you can actually keep lapping on them.

Bonnet up — time to sort the one area still holding the car back.

02 — THE CHOICEDO88 Performance

For this we went to DO88 Performance, a key name in the world of cooling. If you know BMW track cars, you know DO88. The Swedish company is known for a wide range of coolers covering a huge number of applications, and they're a regular sight in E9X M3 track builds.

Knowing they make some of the best coolers out there, we went for the full package:

  • Radiator — more core for the coolant, keeping the S65's water temperature in check on long runs.
  • Engine oil cooler — the S65 is a high-revving V8, and oil temperature is one of the first things to climb on track.
  • DCT cooler — keeps the transmission fluid cool so the gearbox stays sharp and consistent lap after lap.
  • Power steering cooler — a small part that's easy to overlook, keeping the steering feel consistent through a full session.
Four coolers, one package — everything that makes heat in the E92 gets an upgrade.

03 — THE INSTALLBigger than OEM, in with a breeze

Then it was time to fit the package. Every cooler is a lot bigger than the OEM part it replaces, and you only really see how much when the old and new parts sit next to each other on the floor.

Old versus new — the OEM coolers next to their DO88 replacements. The difference in size speaks for itself.

Despite the size, everything went in with very little fuss. That's what you want from a well-engineered kit: designed around the car, no cutting or improvising needed.

04 — WHY IT MATTERSConsistency is the whole point

Heat doesn't just set a limit on how many laps you can do. It changes how the car behaves while you're doing them. As oil and fluid temperatures climb, the engine and gearbox start protecting themselves and the pace drops away. Keep temperatures under control and the car behaves the same on lap ten as it did on lap one.

The DCT cooler sits right behind the lower grille, straight in the airflow.

That's what makes cooling such an important part of a track build. It doesn't feel as exciting as brakes or coilovers, but it's what lets everything else work for a full session instead of two laps.
